COL - NZ

THE ROLE OF OFFLINE METALANGUAGE TALK IN ASYNCHRONOUS COMPUTER-MEDIATED COMMUNICATION - Keiko Kitade - Ritsumeikan University,Kyoto

    Hi both,
Very exciting to see the wikis progressing. Thank you for all your work to make this happen.

To answer an earlier question: once the students correct each text once, they don't have to go back to that same text. Rather, they should be thinking how the corrections are helping them with the language in the following texts and other activities you carry on in class.

For the week of 20 Aug, please have the children:

    1) Correct text #2 from their buddy (likes and dislikes) by identifying the error and writing the correct answer. (Please see the examples I had provided to each form of correction in a previous e-mail).

    2) Write text #3. I'll leave it up to you to decide on the topic. I suggest description of a family member, or music celebrity, or friend. These are topics where they'd use the same vocabulary and structures of weeks 1 and 2.

    Please:
    - No re-writes of their texts #2 this week. They should look at the corrections provided by their buddy and reflect on the types of mistakes they are making. You may want to have them compare the corrections of texts 1 and 2 and see if they are making the same mistakes. They can make note of the mistakes for you to collect them somehow to incorporate to your teaching.

    - Minimum to no help in their writing of texts 3. The writing should start to enter a routine and feel "organic", In other words, although students are not deciding on the topic and tasks for each week, they should be shaping their texts as independently as possible.

    - Although the emphasis of the project seems to be on correction of mistakes, it's really about learning from their interaction. Their texts are a great achievement and they should feel proud of being able to use the language their learning in such an authentic task. You may want to remind them of answering their buddy's questions.

Hopefully, this is clear and you and the students feel that the writing and corrections go smoother each week.

Thank you again for your enthusiasm with the project.
FYI, I will be going out of Auckland and will have limited e-mail access until Tuesday afternoon.

    Buen fin de semana,
    Constanza

  8. Hi Megan:

It has been a delighted activity for students and us. Students are living a new experience not only learning english, but also with their own one. Now they are more careful when they write in both languges, particularly wiht punctuation and capital letters.

About the topic for activiy number three, and taking into account Constanza´s suggestions: Write text #3. I'll leave it up to you to decide on the topic. I suggest description of a family member, or music celebrity, or friend. These are topics where they'd use the same vocabulary and structures of weeks 1 and 2. I consider it would be:

Family members: Physical appearance and personality.
Music: Talk about favorite music, folklore music of their country and the most popular music people listen to.
Celebrity or friend: To reinforce descriptions, likes and dislikes?
I will pay attention your answer.

  9. Thanks Dora for your detailed report of activities and reflection.

Please bear in mind that with so many students participating, it may be the case that there are weeks when their corrections don't go as planned or they don't write because they may be absent, etc. So, it's hard for you to monitor each student's text and each iteration.

Re the third text, please note that my suggestions was to write one of those texts, not all of them. It's a big ask for the students, especially if now yours have to write two different texts in the same week. But, I'll leave it to the two of you to decide.

Megan, as you can see Dora's students have not written text 2. I suggest you try to book the computer suite towards the end of the week if possible so that your students have a text to correct.

Please make sure that the structure of each entry in the week is clearly labeled (eg Text 3 from xx). I suggest that the students get used to labeling their work themselves for clarity.

    Now, off to windy Wellington.

  10. Hola Constanza y Dora,

We were able to go on the computers this afternoon to finish submissions and corrections we left last time. My kids were delighted to see their buddy had corrected their text and were so proud that they had helped with this process!

To keep you up to date Constanza we have now:
    Submitted first text (about me)
    Highlighted errors on buddy's text
    Corrected own text
Submitted 2nd text (me gusta - NZ only so far)
My students noticed that after the corrections made by Colombia, there were a few more errors still present, I told them not to re-correct just yet - what will be do about this? Do we keep highlighting each piece of text until it is perfect? Or do we move on next week and keep it as a record of how far we've come? My kids will also have this same issue, as they tried their best to see what the error was but their 'corrected' versions will still have errors.
They are still really enjoying logging on and communicating with their buddy - very exciting!

Constanza - I have Sandy's (control class) completed tests and questionnaires - how shall I get them to you?

  11. Claudia y Dora,

Thank you for your report of the activities, Dora.

It's great to see that the project is generating so much reflection on the students and motivation levels are kept high.

It worries me a bit that the colombian students did not write text 2 this week for two reasons:
    1) The NZ students will not have a text to correct early this week. Please keep in mind that we are one day ahead and that Monday is another holiday in Colombia. This means that the earliest that you would go to computers is Tuesday Colombian time, Wednesday NZ time.

    2) Your students would now have to write two different texts in the same week which is not the idea of the project. Students should be constructing a relationship with their buddies through the weekly exchange of texts and, most importantly, need time to learn from their writing and from their mistakes.

I'll leave to you Dora and Claudia to discuss how to ensure that the Colombian students keep up with the pace of the project. It seems that you may not have full access to computers or at least not one computer per student which is understandable and we'd need to factor that in for upcoming weeks. Therefore, it takes your students more time to complete the tasks each week. Once you discuss and decide how we can all best accommodate to your circumstances, then we decide if there needs to be a modification to the structure of each week's expectations.

Thank you all for your contribution to the project.

    Un saludo,
    Constanza

  12. This is all getting very exciting!

Respecto.
My mother I like sleeping. También sucede con el auxiliar
    My mother don´t like sleeping

  15. Hola Dora y Constanza,

This week we have been very busy and we just spent 45 minutes at the computers. The students were really excited to see their buddy's response and some feel bad they haven't written more - this is something they all need to work on!

So far they have worked on finishing their 'me gusta' texts, have started to correct their buddy's text by identifying the errors, then copying the sentence with an error and rewriting it. They then went on to upload a picture they took of themselves and wrote about their physical descriptions. Many got excited about uploading their photo and forgot to write about another person... Some of them need to do this at lunchtime today!

I personally like when the students articulate where something is wrong - eg 'you need to use a capital letter here' or 'in Spanish we don't say this.. we say that..' but my students are a bit confused when they receive this kind of feedback as they don't know how to interpret the Spanish explanation. It seems more beneficial to correct the sentences with errors.

We are finding the formatting a bit of a struggle, we don't seem to be able to add more boxes and some of the students aren't sure where to put each text/correction/corrected text. I think we could work on creating their pages so they have more obvious 'spaces' to write in.

Let me know your feedback :)

  16. Hi Constanza and Megan

Me gusta practicar badminton, Me gusta hacer practicar netball,

    Ejemplo:

    Texto 2 de Dora
    I like read books

    Corrección de Megan a Dora
    I like reading books

    7. A partir del viernes trabajaremos texto 3 - physical descriptions

    Megan

  18. Hola
Looks exciting with pictures and everything. I've been trying to tinker with the format of the pages to see if there's a way to add new sections easier, but can't find any way around the layout. Maybe you can ask Christina who I think has more experience with that. We could alternatively create a new page every cycle of texts (write, receive corrections, correct). Any ideas Dora?
What I'll do is to export the content of the whole wiki every week so that we don't lose any data in case someone deletes something inadvertently.
About your comment with the explanations provided, this was supposed to happen in the type of correction scheduled for next week. I'll send details of how we can get around this over the weekend.
    Gracias for all your work.

  19. Hola Megan y Dora:
I hope you are going well.
For the project this week we have two tasks for the students: re-write text 2 and correct text 3.

    1) For the re-write they should copy and paste what their buddy has suggested and then re-write the text (example at the bottom of this message).

Please note that the corrections done by the buddies may include two possible scenarios:

    a) that the buddy has not identified all errors;
    b) that the buddy is suggesting changes based on their variety of Spanish/ English. For example: if a kiwi kid wrote "ojos marrones", the colombian kid may correct to "ojos cafes" because it is the customary use in Colombia. Conversely if a colombian student writes "favorite" and the kiwi kid corrects to "favourite", then it's because in Colombia we tend to teach the american spelling and in NZ the british spelling of that word. In both ocasions, what the student wrote was not "wrong".
Therefore, we need to encourage the students to think if they understand what the other is trying to communicate. I'm sure the student understood "ojos marrones" and "favorite".

That's why the type of correction of this week brings an explanation. It provides the possibility of explaining this differences in usage. For example: in Colombia we say "ojos cafes".

    2) The type of correction for this week for Text 3 is Identify the error; write the correct form / word and provide an explanation (please see example after the message). You will note that by now, corrections are taking long. I'd suggest that you tell the students that they don't need to explain the same mistake or straightforward mistakes such as capitalisation or punctuation.

I hope this is all clear and please don't hesitate if you have questions.
    Un saludo,
    Constanza

  20. Hola Dora y Constanza,

We are making progress! Constanza came in to see my class yesterday and clarified some things we were unsure about. Today we went on to the computers (we just had half an hour) and they:
Attempted to correct their buddy's text by highlighting and then numbering the sentences with errors and rewriting them
Added to their physical descriptions text
We still have gaps with rewriting their me gusta text and finding errors etc. Thank you for your patience!

The feedback from the children is really positive, they LOVE going to the wiki and 'interacting' with their buddy. They love the photos also!

Sian says she has some of her text missing (it has been deleted) does anyone know how to recover this?

Dora, where would you like to take our next text? We haven't learnt about personality yet, the physical descriptions have been very difficult for my students, we have practised this so much in class, but when I see what they write I feel very worried! We could add to the previous text about our personality and one other person (eg trabajador, amable, estudioso...)?
How is everything going in Colombia?

    Un saludo,

  21. Hi Megan and Constanza:

  22. Hola chicas
I'll send a longer e-mail over the weekend with my reflections on the project so far and a couple of suggestions to make your workload more manageable.

Just wanted to suggest that next week's text could be a description of a special person in the kids' country. They may want to choose a sportsperson, prominent figure, celebrity, etc that is somehow representative or iconic of NZ/Col that they want to share with their buddy (who most likely won't know that person). They can describe the person and perhaps do a bit of research to talk about their family and say what the person "likes". With a text like that, they can re-cycle most of what they already know.

    Saludos,

  24. Hola a todas,

We will give Christina's format a try this week, I'll talk the kids through it and will aim to start a few off this week during class time.

Unfortunately, we won't be able to make it to the ICT suite as there are no times left for us to go in, I'm trying to negotiate with other teachers but as the time there is precious it's proving a bit tricky! I have two sessions booked for next week however so we ideally will be able to catch up. To speed things up, the students are writing their piece about a famous New Zealander for homework using some sentence starters I have given them, as really so far they only have a lot of nouns, a handful of verbs and 5 or 6 adjectives!

So, Constanza, there isn't much point in you coming in this week if we can't make it to the ICT suite, but I do still have Sandy's tests so if you can come in on Monday at 11am or Tuesday 11.45 I'll give them to you then.

    Stay in touch!

    Megan

Why don't you discuss the template that Christina suggests and let the rest of us know if that will work for those using the wiki. Then, I suggest that we divide the work on formatting each page and tidying it evenly. The colombian team could do half of the pages and we could do the other half.

I agree with you Christina, there's a lot of impressive work from the students, but we need to rationalise the time for the teachers.

Please let me know what you decide tomorrow and I'll happily spend some time in the formatting, etc.

    Hi Megan,

Wow, the students have done so much! I am very impressed with the level of Spanish and English that both classes are using. The corrections seem to be helping the students think about important things such as plurals and use of verbs. Very impressive.
I also see why it is such a mission in the ICT suite for you! There is no real direction or task titles, so hard for you and the students. Moodle supplied very set directions for my students. I wonder if we tighten up the wiki a bit and make it more of a formal setting for every child so that the parameters for the tasks are not so huge for you.

My suggestions below are hard to give without having actually speaking to you directly as there may be many reasons why you are doing it the way you are, technical wiki use or ease of use for students. The wiki is much less organised than moodle and the students must (and I am sure you!) take a while to figure out what to do each week and then ask a million questions not only about the corrections but how to 'do' them. I am wondering if more structure to the page would make it easier, if there was a definite, no other way of setting it out (students copy an exemplar) and the tasks were much shorter it could be easier to run.

See my example below, not much different to what you have tried to do already but maybe a bit clearer and quite simple.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Task One - Family/familia task

Entry One - Family text - Tommy

Black text for this one and then when the buddy gets it they copy and paste it directly underneath this text and change text color to green.

Entry Two - Family text corrections by Javier

Now this is where the buddy highlights mistakes and changes them to make the text correct. Then copy and paste and change to blue for the final corrections.

Entry Three - Family text final corrections by Tommy

This is the final text and the text with corrections.

Task not complete until it has 3 entries. Over two weeks the pair work to complete their entries, one for Spanish and one for English.
Have a very clear exemplar available to all students that they work from and maybe a checklist for each week of what they need to do.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New task begins in a new box.

Keep text entries much shorter and more simple - 2 to 3 sentences at the most. Even if the same topic is discussed over two weeks.

These are my thoughts and I understand completely if I am on the wrong track as I am not involved in running it so can not really say if what I suggest would work for the teachers, students or researchers.
Let me know what you think next Tuesday and I will catch up with you, maybe we could come up with an exemplar. You have put so much work in (and your students) and you are doing such a great job, I would just like to make things a bit more simple for you, It must be 'hard out' in the ICT suite when you go in for this!

Have a good weekend, hopefully the sun continues to shine!

  26. Hola Claudia y Dora

    Hola Constanza,

My students have written their description of the famous New Zealander in Spanish, they just need to submit it now. I've noticed some of the Colombian kids have written their description in Spanish? (Meghna and Sebastian, Johnny and Cristian/Camilo)

It seems some of the children have copied and pasted each other's texts - I think Cristian (or Camilo? I can't tell who has written what) and Sebastian have the same text about Falcao Garcia. I have a sneaking suspicion that there might be a bit of sabotaging of one another's pages from the Colombian side as I found someone had written "I am a gay boy" at the end of a description, which I removed...

  31. Hola Constanza
